   The Wrong Corridor

   I make my living becoming strangers' girlfriends, daughters and friends for money. Mumbai referrals pay better than my first 2 years here. This week, a wealthy pharma family hired me for their younger son.

   Satyendra Bhaiya, the father, hired me to be Arjun's girlfriend for several gatherings. At their Alibag farmhouse, I held his hand, praised the family and played the role they had paid for.

   I went into the wrong corridor looking for a bathroom. Pulkit, the elder son, dragged Sakshi, his pregnant wife, behind a door. Sakshi came out holding her cheek and would not look at me.

   Pulkit adjusted his cuffs and walked away like nothing had happened. I had 20 minutes to return to Arjun and smile. The woman I had just seen was pregnant, frightened and completely alone in that house.

   I went back to dinner. Satyendra Bhaiya joked, Sujata Tai watched me, and Arjun held my hand. I laughed on cue because fear had not stopped me from doing my job.

   My mother called the next afternoon, smiling from her screen and asking whether I was eating. I said yes. The unfamiliar number she mentioned belonged to our local residents' committee. I felt relief. It was the wrong relief.

   I kept the girlfriend role intact through dinner, but Pulkit and the family now knew I had seen something they wanted hidden. By nightfall, my phone carried my father's name and 3 words: professional pretender.

   Sakshi Asks for Help

   Sakshi confides that Pulkit has abused her for years, and Meera promises help just before he catches them discussing his control.

   Sakshi, the pregnant daughter-in-law, found me alone on the farmhouse terrace that evening. The makeup over her cheekbone had failed, and she said she knew I had been in the corridor.

   She told me Pulkit had been hurting her since their wedding, 2 years ago. Sujata Tai, the mother who watches everything, had done nothing. Sakshi said he would eventually kill her.

   I asked what she wanted. She said she did not know. That frightened answer told me she had spent so long being controlled that escape no longer felt like hers to choose.

   I said yes before calculating anything. I would help Sakshi, the pregnant daughter-in-law, and keep Pulkit from learning what I knew. My safety had become one line beside hers.

   The next afternoon, she told me the pills Pulkit called medicine were sedatives. Pulkit entered, threw her against the counter, then turned to me and said, stay away from her. I stayed very still.

   Chosen for the Cameras

   Meera performs girlfriendhood for an elite social circle until the family's public approval and Arjun's sincerity expose the ugly side of her paid work.

   Sujata Tai, the groom's mother, took me to Alibag's richest jewellery shop to introduce me as Arjun's girlfriend. About 400 people would see her choice, and every camera made the lie bigger.

   She put a gold necklace on me and said she had chosen it herself. I smiled and held Arjun's hand. The family looked proud. I felt public enough to be recognized and disposable enough to be moved.

   That evening, Arjun, the younger son I was paid to date, said he had never felt this way about anyone. He said I had changed everything. His face had no professional polish, only sincere need.

   I kept the girlfriend role intact through the public lunch, but I could not take his confession as real. I smiled until he looked away. The next morning, Pulkit wanted me alone in his study.

   Sakshi Leaves the Farmhouse

   With evidence already sent to Sakshi's uncle, Meera watches Sakshi leave Pulkit's control before a former client recognizes her at the station.

   Sakshi's uncle arrived with a lawyer and told Satyendra Bhaiya, the pharma-family father, they were leaving. Pulkit threatened legal action, but the lawyer had already made his calls.

   Sujata Tai, the pharma-family mother, called Sakshi unstable and said we were manipulating her. Sakshi stood against the wall holding her stomach. She did not look toward Pulkit once.

   I took Sakshi, the pregnant daughter-in-law, across the garden and sent her away with her uncle and lawyer. For the first time, Pulkit could not decide where she slept or whom she called.

   At the Alibag police station, Priya Sharma, the woman who hired me as her best friend 2 years ago, recognized me. She said she thought our friendship was real, then asked who I actually was.

   She walked away before I could explain. Then my phone showed that Pulkit's family had already gathered photographs and messages from me. The next time they found me, they would not be asking about friendship.

   The Evidence Is Gone

   Pulkit assaults Meera and her employers seize her phone, but she reveals that the evidence has already escaped their control.

   The morning after Sakshi left, Pulkit, the elder son, found me photographing threatening messages on his phone. He grabbed my wrist, pinned me to the garden wall and demanded the phone.

   Sujata Tai, the pharma-family mother, had taken it by the time I returned inside. She scrolled through my photographs, voice memos, medical records and timeline while the family accused me of building a case.

   Pulkit listed my real name, my parents in Jaipur and my brother in Pune. Sujata said they knew where everyone lived. Their money had found the one life I had hidden from my family.

   Then I said I had already sent everything to Sakshi's uncle. Pulkit stopped. Sujata's perfect composure broke, and the family understood that I had put the evidence beyond the walls of their farmhouse.

   I had sent every photograph and recording before they found me, so they could not erase the record by breaking my phone. Pulkit picked up the phone from the table and looked at me instead of the screen.

   The Lie After the Blow

   After Pulkit attacks and expels her, Meera must decide whether to tell her mother that she is in danger or preserve the family lie one more call.

   Pulkit, the elder son, broke my phone, hit my face and pulled me upright. He shoved me through the farmhouse gate, then said my parents in Jaipur would learn everything if I contacted anyone again.

   Sujata Tai, the pharma-family mother, called for the driver. Satyendra Bhaiya, her husband, turned away while blood ran from my eyebrow. Nobody stopped Pulkit from opening that gate.

   My mother called later because I had missed our Sunday call. She asked what I was eating, whether my events were going well, and whether I was seeing anyone. I said only that I was eating.

   She told me my brother's wife was showing and the baby would arrive in November. She asked when I would come home. I said December, though I knew I would not be there. I kept the event-manager lie alive.
