The Bit That Stayed Untouched

Keeping the recording private would have made a rather poor headline. Still, I sent the producer the amended rider, and I felt cleaner than any headline could have made me feel.

I keep hearing the trust part more clearly than the contradiction. My clients gave me private audio, and the moment I make it public, I become the person who decided their confidence mattered less than my score. That is not a price I get to set just because I found the seam in Nathaniel’s claim first.

Leena confirmed the timestamp trail. She was calm, annoyingly calm, while I behaved as though a technical rider were a weapon and not a long paragraph demanding that deleted things remain undeleted. She understood. That made it easier, which probably means I would have hated the conversation otherwise.

The accusation is ready. It is sitting in me fully formed, sharp enough to draw blood, and I refused three versions of it. Not because Nathaniel has suddenly become innocent. Because my first move cannot be to turn proof into a performance.

There was a new flash during the panic: everyone mistaking me for somebody who captures weddings while I was holding evidence of a broken claim. Funny, in the sort of way that follows me home.
