The blank roll lied
The blank film bothered me more than the damage to the brass. Damage can be dated, measured, photographed. A blank roll feels like someone reaching into the past and deciding I was never meant to see what happened. I wanted to hate the person who opened it, but I kept thinking they had left one true thing behind by accident.
When the flooded gallery appeared, I felt that sick drop in my stomach that I usually get only when water has just beaten me to the prize. This was worse. This was proof that the official story had been dealt a card face down, and Rale was standing at the table before anyone thought the game had begun.
I sent the image to Rosa because witnesses are sensible. That was the reason I wrote down. The less sensible reason was that I did not want to be alone with what the photograph implied. If I imagine Rale, my shoulders tighten. I imagine him not as a name on paper but as someone who arrived first, watched everyone else follow, and kept quiet while the official version was repeated until it sounded permanent.
I keep checking the padded case as if it might change its mind. The camera is not the find. The photograph is. Yet I am behaving as though the camera itself could vanish, and I do not know whether I am guarding evidence or protecting myself from the answer.
